AppMoat is an enterprise level security tool that can be used cohesively with any anti-virus security software. AppMoat is both extremely powerful and simple to use. Within the program, there are various features available that allow control over file type security.
To begin, follow the instructions below to navigate through AppMoat’s numerous features.
This article will cover the features and functionality of the AppMoat Main Menu screen. A detailed description is given about the Main Menu for the server software.
Protection is enabled automatically after installation is complete. Navigating to “Secure Run” enables you to run an application in a secure environment with minimal-risk to your device. Next to this icon, there is “Reset Profile.” This allows you to reset the environment and delete the history from the secure browser.
Moving on to “Local Options,” click on “Local Policy.” AppMoat will transition to another page, and from there, you may access the file types you would like AppMoat to control. By toggling one of these files types to the “Off” position, AppMoat will ignore this file type when it is executed.
Returning to the Main Menu, we will now navigate to “Local Database.” AppMoat will open a new window in your Internet Explorer web browser.
You will see four circular icons. The home screen, “Database,” will allow you to see the file types AppMoat detected upon installing to the device. By selecting “Current View,” this allows you to select which file types starting with the character selected to be previewed in the window.
Underneath “Current Status,” you can access a drop-down menu that allows you to determine what you would like AppMoat to do with the selected file. In the drop-down menu you may select one of the five options.
- “Trust This Program” will allow AppMoat to continue to trust a specific program.
- “Trust (Wild Card)” allows AppMoat to run programs specifically with this file name (DISCLAIMER: do not use this feature often. Only allow AppMoat to “Trust” programs in which their file size constantly changes, or you trust).
- “Trust (Installer)” should only be used for installing file types.
- “Privacy Mode” will show up as pending in the AppMoat server dashboard, however, the file that is running in "Privacy Mode" will be running within a "Safe_Look" profile.
- “Reject This Program (DENY)” means AppMoat will not allow this file to execute on the device.
Next to “Current Status,” AppMoat takes a digital imprint of each file. By clicking “Details,” you will be brought to another page that displays the application properties information, application status information, authorization status information, and security verification information.
Returning to the remaining three icons, clicking “Support” will bring you to the support portal of Seventh Knight’s website. Next to this is the “Restart” icon which will restart the machine. Last, the “Logout” icon which will log you out of the machine.
Going back to the AppMoat Main Menu, and Advanced Options will open a small tab in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, displaying a drop-down button.
- The first option is “Debug Filter.” This should be turned on by Seventh Knight support technicians only. If there is a problem, the technicians will enable this option to sort out the issue.
- If there is an idea or feature you would like to see developed in AppMoat, you may do so by selecting “Feature Request”.
- Next, there is “Export White List.” AppMoat will create a file registry of the approved files within the device and allow you to export them.
- Next is “Reset Application.” If the user has a file that has been set to be approved or denied AppMoat will no longer know. The next time you run the previously approved or denied file, AppMoat will prompt you with an approve or denial request.
- “Allow Existing Apps” will allow files on the machine prior to AppMoat’s installation to execute without approval. By default, AppMoat selects this option so your executable files are still able to run (only for the local device). If this option is unchecked each file will need approval (selected by default).
- “Assign Install Rights” will allow programs on the local machine to further download other files. This will only apply to files that are approved by AppMoat.
- “Replace Windows UAC (User Account Control)” will replace the UAC with AppMoat security (Selected by default).
- “Account Based Prompts” when selected, will not prompt the user but will automatically execute unrecognized / new software within a separate and secure ID. An administrator will be notified and can view the software in the dashboard of AppMoat’s server “Dashboard.” Until the administrator decides whether to trust or deny the software access to the device, the software will remain in the secure ID and on the dashboard as pending. If this feature is turned off, AppMoat will bring up a prompt asking the user if they would like to run this new software on their profile, or if they would prefer to run it in a secure profile. There is no difference between when the administrator is notified and when it remains as pending in the AppMoat Server dashboard. AppMoat, by default, assumes programs that are not run as admin are not able to install software.
- “Download Updates” will allow AppMoat to download updates and apply them automatically. If this is disabled, you can always access the updates from the Seventh Knight website (selected by default).
- “Technical Support Website” will open a new window in Internet Explorer and take you straight to our support website.
- “Exit Advanced Settings” closes the drop-down menu and unselects the “Advanced Settings” button.
The last icon is “Local uninstall.” This will remove AppMoat from the computer and restart the device once the uninstall is finished.
